HISTORY

40 years ago, a 200-year-old mansion disappeared into thin air in China. Now it has reappeared in Bemban, Melaka and is known as the ‘TKS Antique & Heritage Gallery’, and displays more than 2000 pieces of antiques.

The mansion with carved camphor wood as beams was originally a private residence belonging to a wealthy salt merchant. It was brought back to the present day by Mr. Teo Chwee Bock, a 73-year-old retired merchant.

The old mansion was built before the end of Emperor’s Jia Qing’s rule and was bought over by Mr. Teo Kin Swee, the father of Mr. Teo Chwee Bock during the Cultural Revolution of China, 40 years ago. It was then dismantled and sent to Melaka.

Mr. Teo Kin Swee spent all his saving on dismantling and transporting all the materials to Malacca, so he could not afford to rebuilt it. What he did was to build a warehouse to store the bits and pieces. In the meantime, a plan of the mansion was sketched.

Now, Mr. Teo Chwee Bock is able to carry out his father’s wishes and had the mansion rebuilt according to the original style, i.e. the Qing dynasty Huizhuo style.

In 2008, he engaged 4 skilled craftsmen from China. They managed to complete the rebuilding of the mansion. This rare replica of the mansion is the only Huizhuo style building not only in Malaysia, but also worldwide.

Mr. Teo Chwee Bock’s passion for antiques is not less than that of his dad. During his 13 years stay in China, he collected antiques which are now being displayed in this museum for the public’s viewing. In fact it is difficult to find these precious antiques even in China some of which are more than a few thousand years old.

Working hand-in-hand with the Research Institute of the Malacca Museum, Mr. Teoh Bock Swee plans to promote the museum as the Heritage Gallery and to create awareness among the public. Out of the collection of the antiques in TKS Antiques and Heritage Gallery, quite a number of the antiques were from the Han Dynasty. The most ancient of which were the Geometric pattern vase and Routine pattern can were from the Warring State Periods – more than 2400 years ago.

The antiques are acclaimed for their perfect workmanship/ craftsmanship. This included the statue of Bodhidharma carved out of agar wood, the limited edition of the Forbidden City “Panorama along the river during the Qing Ming Festival” on gold rice paper; a century old “Pine tree and Crane folding screen”, porcelain, pottery and imitation of terracotta warriors and horses.

The entrance of the Gallery also display gardian lions and drums carved out of rocks which express the prominent identity of the owner.

In his younger days TBS’s son was puzzled why his grandfather collected so many blocks of wood and cultural relics. At that time, his grandfather replied: “These are treasures, if we do not keep them, they will be extinct.”

At that time the boy could not understand, but now he realized the underlying significance of his grandfather’s words.
