Many people believe that the effect of local herbal treatment is not as effective as foreign herbal; moreover most of the herbal are toxic. This is because Malaysia is a summer country, therefore it is not suitable for cultivation of the same types of herbs. Dr. Chan Chew Chok disagrees with the above statement. According to his experiences of cultivation of herbal medicine and clinical treatment for many years, it shown that the local herbal treatment is very effectiveness and is a good cure for many diseases.
Dr. Chan has the experience in cultivation of herbs for almost 30 years. He has own herbal farm with around 5000 Randia spinosa (雍树) plants, over 400 Ficus carica (无花果) and many other types of medicinal herbal. He has carried out professional laboratory tests on his herbal species, confirmed that it does not contain any prohibited ingredients by Ministry of Health, such as metals, mercury and arsenic. There is no signs of poisoning and side effects on the patients after taking a herbal medicine, on the contrary, their conditions are getting better, and then recovered. Many people even some traditional Chinese doctor are doubt on the effectiveness of the local herbal medicine. This is mainly because they do not have in-depth study and long-term use on the herbs.
In fact, most of the herbs are non-toxic, only a small number of herbs are poison. However, once these poisonous herbs being processed under high temperature, the toxicity will be greatly reduced and reach the safety standards which can be used as medical treatment. Therefore, as long as patients take the herbal medicine according to the dose fixed by the doctor, the effects of diseases treatment can be achieved.
Many people will ask, Malaysia as a summer country for 365 days, is it suitable for the herbs cultivation? Dr. Chan, being the consultant of Association of traditional herbal medicine at Ipoh Perak, believes that the growth period of local herbal medicine is different from other season countries. Most of the local herbs have a longer growth period. Therefore the environment in Malaysia is ideal for the cultivation of herbal medicine. The longer the cultivation period, the quality of the herbs will be better.
Dr. Chan analysed that, a season is very short and not sufficient for a cultivation period; therefore it is not suitable for herbal plants which need a long cultivation period. If these kinds of herbs are harvested in short term, the medical effect of the herbs will be affected. Conversely, if the medical herbs are planted in Malaysia with perennial hot days throughout the year, the herbs are harvested after a sufficient period of growth; for sure the medical value is the best.
In Dr. Chan herbal farm, there are lots of local medical herbal, such as Ficus carica (无花果), Dioscorea bulbifera (黄独), Elephantopus scaber (地胆头), Strobilanthes crispus (黑面将军), Zebrina Pendula Schnizl (水龟草), Rodgersia sambucifolia Hemsl (岩陀叶), Sansevieria trifasciata (金边兰), Dendrohyrax arboreus (南非树), Clerodendron fragrans Vent (臭茉莉) and Rhizoma curcumae (莪术). He uses these herbal medicines to treat illnesses for the patients.
